Surf Rock (Auburn, Ala., or Grid Sector 23B6-1, U.S.)
Nearly 20 years ago, extraterrestrials touched down in Alabama (don’t they always?) and left a quartet of their kind behind. The visitors from the stars combined a style of earth music called Surf Rock with their incredibly advanced technology (which didn’t add as much as you might imagine) and became the highly evolved and bloody brilliant and constantly rotating Man or Astroman? Between the oxygenated atmosphere and the rigors of touring (and perhaps their endless anal probe duties), the aliens of MOAM? announced they would cease transmissions in 2001. They reunited for Touch and Go’s 25th anniversary show in 2006, and have once again resumed activity to the extent that rumors abound concerning a new album. Why has Man or Astroman? returned now? This is no time for questions; scream, shout and shake your ass … it may be the only thing that will stop the probes.
You’ll Dig It If You Dig: Go-go boots with bikinis, Frankie and Annette, Young Fresh Fellows, planetariums, science fiction movies from the golden era of bad cinema, reverb, whammy bars and Quisp. (Brian Baker, CityBeat)
~ "Mutated sci-fi surf rock, gussied up with lots of B-movie samples, computer-generated banter and shiny space suits—you know, the usual." (The Onion AV Club)
