My Gold Mask

My Gold Mask

Goth Pop (Chicago)

Windy City duo Gretta Rochelle and Jack Armondo conjure a pretty convincing clatter for two people. Armondo makes the most of his Rockabilly guitar licks, which complement Rochelle’s soulful yelps with stealthy effectiveness. The Yeah Yeah Yeahs are an obvious touchstone, as are any number of like-minded precursors — even Grace Slick seems an inspiration. But there’s something unique in My Gold Mask’s gothic excursions, a strangely affecting atmospheric element that is likely to translate well to a live setting. Plus they have a song called “My Gorgeous Cocaine Nose.”

You’ll Dig It If You Dig: Yeah Yeah Yeahs, a less fierce X, Helium on cocaine and cough syrup. (Jason Gargano, CityBeat)

~ "...the bottled lightning of 'Violet Eyes' makes My Gold Mask a band to watch." (Pitchfork)

~ "My Gold Mask infuses some heart into the mundane and makes it beautiful."(Pretty Much Amazing)
