Alternative Rock (Minneapolis)
Pictures of Then’s 2007 debut, Crushed by Lights, was a cool splice of vintage Prog and visceral Modern Rock, and their follow-up, 2009’s The Wicked Sea, was a swirling continuation of that same general idea with more depth and songwriting soul, including Superdrag neo/retro posturing, Kinks/Spoon dancehall swooning and Smashing Pumpkins-channel-The-Pretty-Things garage-stained Blues. Like The Shins and the 88, Pictures of Then are taking completely familiar Pop/Rock ingredients and cooking up a wildly original and utterly delicious recipe.
