Post Rock (San Diego)
Jimmy LaValle’s most recent album as The Album Leaf, 2010’s A Chorus of Storytellers, opens with nearly 20 seconds of silence before field recordings of humans speaking and a spare, slightly ominous organ enters the listener’s headspace. More echoing, distant voices enter before a slow beat materializes, culminating in a kind of ambient washout. For the uninitiated, it’s the perfect introduction to an artist who combines a number of Post Rock elements to create soundscapes both moody and transportive. Expect much of the same in a live setting.
You’ll Dig It If You Dig: Sigur Ros, Mogwai without the freak-outs. (Jason Gargano, CityBeat)
~ "The Seal Beach EP, originally issued in 2003 in Spain, appeared stateside in early 2005, and LaValle's next album, Into the Blue Again, followed in September 2006. The Album Leaf toured sporadically throughout the remainder of the decade, performing in multiple continents and opening for Devendra Banhart at the Hollywood Bowl in 2008. Two years later, LaValle returned with his fifth full-length album, A Chorus of Storytellers." (All Music Guide)
