Indie Rock (Harpers Ferry, W.V.)
Don’t let the band name fool you. Dean Wells has been going the solo route as the Capstan Shafts for a dozen years now, writing short, sharp, brilliant Pop songs and recording alone at home in the lowest of fi. Don’t let the solo thing fool you. Wells put together an actual band to play South by Southwest and CMJ and probably Bumbershoot, for crap sake, so prepare to hear The Capstan Shafts in a whole new live context. Namely plural.
You’ll Dig It If You Dig: Guided By Voices, Robert Pollard, Boston Spaceships, Circus Devils, Milko Waif and the Airport 5 take a cab to any Who show anywhere. (Brian Baker, CityBeat)
~ "The Capstan Shafts might sound like some exotic outfit with several bearded instrumentalists, but the band actually started as the solo act of Dean Wells. Best known for sounding like he makes tracks in his bedroom with a cassette recorder, Wells' acclaimed style of lo-fi garage pays homage to the short pop song." (Spinner)
