Indie/Experimental (Montreal, Canada)
The unique rhythms and textures in the music of Canadian foursome The Luyas (featuring current and former members of Arcade Fire and Bell Orchestre) has a dizzying-to-hypnotic effect, the atmospherics forming a brand of experimental Pop that is truly unique. That’s par for the course for a band — which layers detached percussion, effected guitars, horns and spooky vocals — so set on exploring new territory, they even rock the Moodswinger, a 12-string zither invented by a Dutch experimental luthier.
You’ll Dig It If You Dig: The long-awaited Blonde Redhead/Stereolab/Robert Fripp collaboration. (Mike Breen, CityBeat)
~ "Its frenetic pace isn't one you'd want a band to keep up for too long. The rapid-fire approach may keep The Luyas from getting bogged down by formulas for one song, but the deep cuts that follow succeed by loosening up and breathing. The big, sweeping washes of sound that characterize the rest of the album further undermine those first impressions. The Luyas' members provoke and then beat back expectations; it turns out they're equally good at both." (NPR)
