Synth Pop/Punk (Columbus, Ohio)
Two years ago, multi-instrumentalists Nathan Photos, Mike Rana and Matt Grady retired their much-loved band Igby and reformed as the sonically diverse Town Monster. Although guitars still figure in the Town Monster’s sound, synthesizers and computers are the dominant feature in the band’s arsenal, along with a schizophonic genre approach. The Town Monster goes from gritty Garage Rock accomplished with synths to horror movie soundtrack thematics to classic ’80s Synth Pop with barely a breath or a blink. They've been perpetually busy since releasing their debut, Autumn People, last year, expanding to a quartet (Mike Rana departed, James Allison and Brad Wilson joined), opening for Weezer and recording monthly EPs; their song “One Thousand Wolves” made the Top 5 requested songs on Columbus’ CD101. Can synth bands have mosh pits? Bet your ass.
