MONTY IS...

THE MAN. THE MYTH. THE CAPTAIN.

Long, long ago, in a galaxy far, far away—wait, wrong beginning. Ahem. The origin of Monty the Riverboat Captain is a tall-tale shrouded in mystery. Some say he was born on the banks of the Ohio River under a blue moon, and others say he simply appeared on a riverboat one summer day, a young man with a full white mustache. Regardless of which story you choose to believe, this much is known: Monty has steered many a riverboat safely in and out of varied ports, and these credentials have helped him earn the position of the official Midpoint Music Festival mascot. We’re very excited to have Monty aboard serving as the guiding light of all things MPMF Indie Summer Series and MidPoint Music Festival 2011!

MIDPOINT INDIE SUMMER SERIES

The MidPoint Indie Summer Series is a free concert series taking place every Friday on Fountain Square, June 3 through September 2.

FRIDAY, JUNE 3

9:40pm :: You, You're Awesome (CD Release Party)

The first time Monty listened to Cincinnati-based duo You, You’re Awesome (YYA), he was part of a jam-packed audience at one of his favorite Cincinnati haunts. The flashing lights, ‘80s-workout-video projections, dedication of the drummer and energy of the synthesizer/Nintendo DS/overall-cool-sounds maestro combined in such a way that had Monty’s mustache not already been naturally curled at the tips, it would have out of sheer exuberation. Be prepared for a lot of booty-shakin’ and head-bouncin’; as Monty found, it is nearly impossible to stand still during YYA’s creative, collaborative and dynamic set. And cheers! This is the CD Release Party for YYA’s debut LP, Good Point, Whoever Said That.

8:20pm :: Javelin

Remember that obscure song blaring from the neighbor kid’s beat-up Trans Am, back in the idyllic summer days of the ‘90s, when all you wanted was a Rocket Pop from the ice cream truck? Combine that with heavy synth production and the feeling of wandering through a postmodern museum hopped up on 5 Hour Energy, and you’ll have an inkling of what’s in store when you check out Javelin. A cousin-duo from Brooklyn, Javelin crafts refreshing Electronica grooves using boom boxes, found and self-made samples.

7:00pm :: Lydia Burrell

Thick and chunky, like your favorite peanut butter, Lydia Burrell knows what you’re craving at any given time. This Electronica trio from Louisville, KY, utilizes a myriad of synthesized effects, propelling guitar and drum lines, and front man/founder Alexander Smith’s even-keeled vocals run smoothly on top of the cacophony of melodies. Think industrial electronic grinding force meets surprisingly pop-minded vocalizations.  In short, Lydia Burrell=a Reese’s Cup, the perfect combination of two things that unexpectedly belong together.
