MIDPOINT INDIE SUMMER SERIES :: SEPT. 2
9:00pm :: Wussy
One listen to Wussy and I'm quickly turning into one. This Cincinnati four-piece has it all: heartstring-tugging lyrics, wearily beautiful vocals, impeccable guitars, solid drums. Their dedicated musicianship and well-crafted rock style marinates in a Crock Pot of indie sensibilities and the result is pretty close to genius. Each song brought to us by these well-seasoned musicians is fresh and unexpected, contained and straining, all the while sticking to their Midwestern roots with a melancholic tilt of the head. Every time Lisa Walker sings, I feel like I should take notes and reflect in the quiet personal wisdom she shares with those of us listening. Wussy is the musical equivalent of the janitor from The Breakfast Club, not trying to give us advice, but rather there to listen, and to be listened to. We should all be listening.
8:15pm :: The Lions Rampant
You know how those lion cubs just roll around in the tall grass on National Geographic, totally ignoring the camera, resplendent in their natural awe? That's pretty much what The Lions Rampant are. They're a Cincinnati personification of confidence, mixed with hyperactive drums, smoky sexy vocals, genre-spanning guitars, touches of distortion, pops of unexpected instrumentation (a blues-garage-rock band with an organ and horns? Yes, please and thank you) and an irresistibly infectious vibe. That was a long run-on sentence, but I think you'll be over it once The Lions Rampant maul your eardrums with awesome. They'll smile handsomely while melting your face off. (Maybe you should all leave our girlfriends at home...)
7:00pm :: Two Headed Dog
If two heads are better than one, Two Headed Dog is EVEN better. This Cincinnati-based foursome takes meaty piece of psychedelia and rock, tosses them in a Shake 'n' Bake bag coated with the blues, and delivers a crispy, crunchy aural feast. Heavy-handed guiding guitars, strong, trance-y vocals and crashing drums define these gentlemen's sound. If Black Sabbath and Jimi Hendrix got into a bar fight over a British girl, Two Headed Dog would be the resultant spawn. Paternity test still pending, influences evident.
